There has been a mixture of sad,
interesting and hilarious events making the headlines in Nigeria during
the course of the week. Sadly, eight secondary school students died
after being hit by a truck in Ogun state. The leader of the Catholic
church, Pope Benedict XVI who joined Twitter last week sent out his
first Tweet this week. Comic actor, Victor Ifeanyichukwu got Nigerians
laughing when he rode to the venue of his wedding in a truck.
Here’s a summary of some events that were trending across the country this week.

A 27 year old Nigerian woman,
Franca Abumen,
reported as being a commercial sex worker living in Rome, Italy, has
met her untimely death in the hands of yet to be identified persons who
brutally murdered her and dumped her body in the woods of Stifone,
between Narni Waters, in Rome. Franca’s body was found 24 hours after
she was murdered on Sunday December 9th after her friends reported her
missing when she failed to return home from a night of work. Franca was
found in the woods with her ankles tied and a black cord around her
neck. Police believe she was sexually assaulted and strangled. The
police in Rome are investigating the case.

There
was a mild drama at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on Tuesday
when the court was told that the respondent in a civil matter before it
died before the suit was filed. The respondent, Bosu Felix Agunbiade,
died eight years ago. The landlady, Mrs. Funmilayo Oshinaike of 5,
Araromi Street, Ejigbo, Lagos, dragged her dead tenant to the court to
recover arrears of rent totalling N450, 000 and take possession of the
apartment. Elizabeth Agunbiade, wife of the respondent, who was present,
told the court that her husband died eight years ago and her landlady
knew, but still went ahead to file the suit.

Eight
students of Itori High School, Ewekoro local government area of Ogun
state, were killed on Wednesday when a truck loaded with granite swerved
off the road and rammed into the school children by the roadside.
Eyewitness account has it that the incident occurred just immediately
the students left their school and were heading home. The truck was said
to be coming from Abeokuta, the state capital when it veered off the
median, having poured it’s content, to ram into the students. The
unfortunate incident incurred the wrath of the villagers who took the
law into their hands by smashing cars and other vehicles in sight.

Pope Benedict XVI sent
out his first tweet on Wednesday, a week after joining Twitter. His
main account is @Pontifex which is in English but he has seven other
linked Twitter accounts. The other seven have a suffix at the end for
the different language versions. The German version is @Pontifex_de, and
the Arabic version is @Pontifex_ar. The tweets will be going out in
Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and
French. The pope already has over a million followers on all his
accounts.

A
Lagos High Court in Ikeja on Thursday dismissed a suit by some
commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) in Lagos State challenging the
state’s traffic law banning their operation on some designated
off-limits roads in the state. Justice Aishat Opesanwo dismissed the
suit “in entirety,” including all the Okada riders’ 10 declarative
prayers, as lacking in merit. The judge upheld the submissions of the
state government and the House of Assembly that no road had been
designated by the National as a federal highway in accordance with
provisions of the constitution.

The Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Church (KICC),
Matthew Ashimolowo has completed the multi-billion naira
KICC University
situated at Ode Omu, Osun state. KICC University sits over 500 acres of
land. The University would be structured around six faculties and 22
mainstream departments. The Schools of Medical Science and Pharmacy in
the College of Medical Sciences as well as the Faculty of Law are to run
faculty/school-based degree programmes. The University would run a
total of 59 academic programmes.

The
Lagos State Police Command has arrested a manager and a housemaid for
killing their boss, Alhaja Sikirat Eko, in Omole Phase 1, Lagos State.
Eko was said to be running a restaurant and bar in her compound, where
she lived alone with the maid. The suspects allegedly killed Eko at her
home and kept her corpse within the premises. They continued to run the
restaurant, giving neighbours and customers the impression that the
deceased had travelled. They ran out of luck when relatives of the
deceased came on a visit. After the case was reported at the police
station, her corpse was found inside a well where they threw it tied to a
generator.

Nollywood comic actor,
Victor Ifeanyichukwu
officially walked down the aisle with his wife of over 12 years and
mother of his four children, Roseline Nchelem in Port Harcourt this
week. Famously known as Adams Picolo, Osuagwu decided to add colour to
his wedding by riding in a truck down to the venue of the wedding. After
the couple exchanged marital vows, they both mounted the truck through a
ladder alongside Nollywood actor Francis Duru and his wife, Adokiye who
acted as the Best Man and Chief Bridesmaid respectively. The ‘wedding
train’ led by the brigade band and a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) police
team, navigated through the streets of Port Harcourt.
