The front-runners for the office are; former vice-president, Dr Alex Ekwueme, former Senate President, Dr. Ken Nnamani and former chairman of the party, Dr Okweselizie Nwodo. Also in strong contention are former national chairman of the party, Dr Ahmadu Ali and former Works Minister, Chief Tony Anenih as well as chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Only Dr Ekwueme and Chief Tony Anenih had once occupied the exalted position.
While certain party leaders have thrown their weight behind the candidature of Tony Anenih due to the respect they believe he commands among the party’s founding fathers, another section believes Dr Ken Nnamani is the man for the job and they point to his warm relationship with the civil society groups as an indicator. However, there are subtle moves to concede the position to the south-east.
A source that ruled out the possibility of former PDP national chairman, Ahmadu Ali, occupying the seat argued that, “…the national secretary of the PDP BoT, Senator Walid Jubril is from Nasarawa State. The chairman and secretary of the BoT can not come from the same zone.”
